WARNING: This product contains nicotine. Nicotine is an addictive chemical. You must be 21 or older to purchase e-liquid at Sam's. We ID every customer.

"Salt nic or freebase?" is one of the most common questions we get from folks filling a refillable device for the first time. They're not interchangeable, and putting the wrong one in the wrong device is the fastest way to a bad experience. Here's the plain version.

The short answer

  • Salt nicotine (nic salts): smoother at high strength, made for small low-power pod devices, satisfies fast. Good for former smokers and anyone who wants a discreet, tight draw.
  • Freebase nicotine: stronger throat hit, made for bigger sub-ohm tanks and mods, big clouds, lower strengths. Good for people who like the hands-on vaping hobby side of things.

If you only remember one thing: match the juice to the device. High-strength salt nic in a high-power mod is a harsh, wasteful mistake.

What's actually different

Both are nicotine — the difference is chemistry. Nic salts add an acid (often benzoic) that makes high-strength nicotine feel smooth instead of harsh. That's why you can vape 50 mg salt nic comfortably in a little pod, but 50 mg freebase would be brutal.

Throat hit

Freebase gives a stronger, scratchier throat hit, especially as strength climbs. Some people want that — it feels more like a cigarette drag. Salt nic is smoother even at high numbers, which is why pod systems lean on it.

Strength and how it's labeled

  • Salt nic is usually sold at 25 mg/mL and 50 mg/mL (sometimes written 2.5% and 5%).
  • Freebase is usually 3 mg, 6 mg, 12 mg — much lower numbers, because you're inhaling a lot more vapor per puff in a big device.

A heavy former smoker often does well on 50 mg salt nic in a pod. A hobbyist cloud-chaser runs 3–6 mg freebase in a sub-ohm tank. Both can land in a satisfying place — they just get there differently.

Device match (this is the important one)

| You have | Use | |---|---| | Small pod system / refillable disposable | Salt nic (25–50 mg) | | Sub-ohm tank or box mod | Freebase (3–6 mg) |

Running salt nic in a sub-ohm device delivers a punishing dose and burns through liquid fast. Running low-mg freebase in a tiny pod often leaves people unsatisfied so they chain-vape it. Wrong tool, wrong job.

"Which is right for me?"

Ask yourself two questions:

  1. What device do I want to carry? If you want something pocketable and low-fuss, you're in salt-nic-and-pod territory. If you enjoy tinkering, coils, and clouds, you're headed toward freebase and a bigger setup.
  2. How much nicotine do I actually use? Be honest about your cigarette or current vape habit. Going too strong feels harsh and jittery; too weak and you'll over-vape. We'd rather dial you in than sell you the wrong thing.

A few practical tips

  • New to refilling? Start with a pod and salt nic. It's the gentler learning curve.
  • If a salt nic feels too intense, step down to 25 mg before you give up on it.
  • Store e-liquid cool and out of sunlight — a hot Texas car will age it fast.
  • Keep all nicotine products sealed and away from kids and pets. Nicotine is toxic if swallowed.

The rules at Sam's

  • 21+, ID required, no exceptions.
  • We sell nicotine and zero-nic e-liquid only. No cannabinoid/THC vapes — those aren't legal to sell in Texas and we don't carry them.
  • We don't make health claims. This is an adult nicotine product for adults who already use nicotine.
