A straight tube holds less water, clears faster and snappier, and is easier to clean because there are no corners for residue to hide in.
My honest counter advice: first piece, get the beaker — the stability alone saves more glass than any other factor. If you already know you like a fast, light pull, go straight tube. Either way the joint hardware is the same (usually 14mm or 18mm), so bowls and ash catchers swap between them down the road.
